On Zhang Ai-ling's Thought and the Analysis of Spirit and Economy in Her Novels

    • On the basis of discussing the relationship between Zhang Ai-ling herself and economy and material, the article makes an inquiry into the formation reasons of her thought of paying attention to the analysis both of spirit and economy, which is used to read and understand some of her earlier works. By analyzing the psychology of characters in her novels and recognizing the nature of various spiritual phenomena of men and women in metropolises like Shanghai and Hongkong, it reveals her originality ——depicting charcters’ psychology vividly and tapping it deeply under the precondition of the balance between spirit analysis and economy analysis. No matter how strong the tone of spirit analysis is, her novels are always controlled by economy motivation consciouslessly. In this sense, the depth of humanity she reached is beyond other writers using spirit analysis theory.
